Cedar Shake Roofs

Cedar Shake roofing has been around since the colonial times in America. Asphalt shingles are the prevalent roof systems seen in most neighborhoods, however, Cedar Shake is a great looking, durable option in the same higher end category as Tile Roofing (Tile roofing GSR article link). Cedar Shake can be wind rated up to 180-245 mph, and will commonly have a lifespan of about 30 years or more with proper installation and upkeep. Cedar Shake roof systems are very durable compared to asphalt shingle roof systems, but there are several factors to keep in mind when deciding which system you want.

Advantages

Durability - wind rating of 185-245 mph and 30 year lifespan

Energy Efficient - Cedar Shake has a thermal rating double that of asphalt shingles, keeps home insulated and cooler during summer months

Cedar is very resistant to moisture and keeps its shape much better than other wood products

Disadvantages

Installation is expensive. Cost for a cedar shake roofing system can be around $8.00 per square foot or more depending on the grade of cedar used for the installation

Maintenance is required - it is important to keep debris off of the roof and gutters, and also getting rid of plants and branches that shade the roof; sunlight is key to keeping the roof dry and algae/mold free

Cedar Shake is a great option for anyone who is willing to put in the time or hire someone to perform the maintenance needed to get the fullest extent of the lifespan that comes along with a cedar shake roofing system. The benefits (https://www.cedarbureau.org/product-types/benefits-of-cedar-installation-tips/)are clearly laid out, but make sure you are aware of any factors that may or may not meet with your specific home and needs!
